Unity AI Assistant vs MCP for Unity: built-in agent or bring your own?

Pick Unity AI Assistant for a ready-made in-editor agent on Unity 6 paid through Pro or $10/mo plus credits; pick MCP for Unity to drive the editor free with the AI agent you already use, on Unity 2021.3 or newer.

Both let an AI agent work inside the Unity Editor: inspect your scene, change GameObjects and edit scripts. Unity AI Assistant is Unity's own in-editor agent, running third-party models on Unity credits, and needs Unity 6.0 or newer. MCP for Unity is a free, MIT-licensed bridge from Coplay that brings no AI of its own: you connect Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code or a local model, and it supports Unity 2021.3 LTS through 6.x.

Pick Unity AI Assistant if…

You're on Unity 6, want an agent that already knows Unity and your scene without setting anything up, and you're fine paying through a Pro seat or the $10 Personal plan plus credits.

Pick MCP for Unity if…

You already pay for Claude Code, Cursor or another agent (or run a local model), want it to drive the editor for free, or you're on a Unity version older than 6.0.

Our verdicts

Unity AI Assistant

Unity's own in-editor agent: it inspects your scene, GameObjects and components, carries out editor actions and checks the result. You pick from third-party models and pay in credits. Still in beta, and Unity says it is meant for evaluation rather than full production. Your data isn't used for training unless you opt in, and generated assets are tagged as AI-made, so plan your store disclosure. Unity's MCP server and Claude Code/Codex plugin are free if you'd rather bring your own agent.

MCP for Unity

A free, MIT-licensed bridge that lets any MCP client (Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, local models) work inside the Unity Editor: create scenes and GameObjects, edit and validate C# scripts, read the console, run tests and trigger builds. It brings no AI of its own, so you pay for whichever agent you connect, and its optional 3D, image and audio generation tools need your own Tripo, Meshy or fal.ai keys. The team behind it also sells Aura, a paid Unity and Unreal assistant.
